Earlier this week, I had the honor of breaking fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody. It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time. Ā In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to giveāmercy, dignity, and humanity. Eid Mubarak, New York.

like, the absolute minimum you would need to do to make ai generated code sustainable would be to transition to local open models. "everyone should use llms" is just absolutely not an acceptable option when it means "everyone should pay a small number of increasingly powerful and evil companies"

the rest of this thread is an interesting read even if i disagree with the thesis, but this part just makes no sense as a supporting argument. i do kind of like HFT as a metaphor for LLMs + tool call loops though.

I think if you asked me to mock these guys then "desperately need therapy: will never get therapy" and "refuse to introspect ever" are things I coulda come up with. But. "Obviously when you introspect you just feel guilt, so clearly this is a plot against Great Men" is too perfect. Beyond me.

Yes, thatās the issue. Iāve been trying to find a way to articulate this: to the extent that LLMs serve a purpose in education, itās an indictment of the education system, not a praiseworthy feature of LLMs.

I think I can recall at least a dozen professors and engineers who I saw over the last two years openly concede that they no longer saw the need for a few of their grad students/interns because of LLM tooling. Once again, if that isnāt a form of pulling up the ladder, then I donāt know what is.

So to sum it up, real-world, safe AI coding usage is to have a conversation with the computer for every single intentional change you want to make to your codebase. This is fun enough that it makes you feel faster, and you're actually not. I would never pay for this if my job weren't paying for it.

I know this thing is only actually speeding up my work in like 10% of cases where the task I'm doing is one level of complexity above a find-and-replace. For writing actual code, it's way slower than if I just do it. But talking to my little computer buddy gives me dopamine hits so I waste my time.

big fan of Atwood doing a Socratic dialogue with Claude and driving to this point at the close. there are many ways of saying "this technology is interesting and powerful and significant and not as-advertised" with less subtlety.

As someone who gets paid a lot of money to provide contract engineers for scientific industry who use a whole lot of AI, I can't disagree more. The best way to understand LLMs is that if you're about to run headfirst into a brick wall, they take you there faster.
