already this Blackhawk book is well worth the trouble - it’s got the Chaykin mini up front, sure, but the last 2/3 of the volume is the serials from Action Weekly, with Rick Burchett (with Mike Grell and Martin Pasko writing), explicitly trying to do a comic in the style of Chaykin - fascinating!

Sgt. Fury no. 3 (Sept 1963) cover by Jack Kirby. There’s some question about who inked the great, iconic cover: Ayers, Ditko, or Kirby himself. I lean toward Ditko as the most likely inker. Anyway, what a cool image, despite (or because of) all the copy filling the blank spaces.
