Happy birthday, Joan Jett. I first saw Joan as a member of the Runaways, on a double bill with the Ramones! Cherie had split, and Joan was the lead singer. Great stuff, but The Ramones blew them off the stage. A couple years later her solo album came out and I saw her at a small club in Columbus.

If you want an example of what dictators and their minions do to satirists, look to the great Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat. As the Bashar Assad regime started to crumble in 2011, Ferzat produced a series of a scathing cartoons. He was severely beaten by secret police thugs. They broke both hands.

What a great film. For everyone of my journalism generation, this is the news business we were hoping for. Big newsrooms, fearless editors, valued reporters. We started entering into the biz just 10 years after Watergate, and found to our dismay that's NOT what the biz was now.

Hard to pick a favorite Redford film. All the President's Men, for obvious reasons, as a newspaperman who came of age in that era. I watch it regularly. Another one I really like is Three Days of the Condor, one of the Paranoia Films of the 1970s. A story that is now all too real.

Worshiping at the Alter of Comics! The new books on display here went on sale from Sept. 1971 to Nov. 1971, according to the Mike's Newsstand database. So I would've been the same age as the kid here. I bought almost all of these as the were released. 1971 was a great year for comics, man.

Every year I don't exhibit, I feel pangs of regret. SPX started in 1994. My first show was 1998, just as a tourist. First time I exhibited was 2002. I sat at the Slave Labor Graphics bank of tables, my publisher at the time. I'll be there next year, with a new book!

I've worked on the far-right beat for nearly 10 years now, and I've had to handle sorting through a lot of misinformation on politically motivated violence. And this is by far the worst instance of it, including from a lot of people who should really know better.
