The trick I've found to be the most useful when designing a story's cast is not just to work them up in silhouette (ensuring that they read differently at a foundational level), but to start with literal shapes. You can more easily spot the means to differentiate similar components (like armor).

I think I'm going to use "in tension" for this. Verb form would be "tensioning." It most closely fits what I'm thinking for the principal being discussed (the principle being to position each parry for the express purpose of delivering a riposte). (Because they fight like movie samurai/Jedi here)

Need to fit everyone in a text-heavy panel? Balloons gonna be where your characters are gonna be standing (place your balloons when composing the panel, and you'll know!)? Have the characters perform actions suitable to them, but which change how much space they occupy, where they are, how tall, etc

I agreed to sing music I don't know in a quartet tomorrow morning and I'm lousy at sightreading so my kid is recording the bass line for me on the harp to practice on the drive there. Having a kid old enough and skilled enough at something to be able to lean on them for help is WILD and I love it.

2) I'm dating myself, but the phrase "Quincy Punk" used by, improbably, *both* TV writers of my generation and actual Southern CA punks originated from an odious episode of QUINCY M.E. where he endeavored to sacve soem LA kids from the evil punk scene. TV tropes has a banger of a write-up.

OHhhh I've been so very excited for this one. I love Urasawa's work but his using his platform to give us all access to discussions with his peers and forbears has been hugely impactful, too. MANBEN is a treasure.

Something a lot of folks seem blind to: having a debate or "engaging with" or having a conversation or anything else where you have no intent whatsoever to internalize and reflect on what is said by the other party is NONE of those things. It's lecturing, just a performance with a human prop.

I bought a bunch of MOME volumes and almost immediately got rid of them. Same for some BEST AMERICAN COMICS. Infuriating. There's plenty of GREAT short form out there! Just because you don't have an excerpt from an A-lister* doesn't mean your book is lacking. *If this is necessary, commission one!
