Love finding historical info booklets, especially on western history. While some can be dated, many can have focused information not easily found elsewhere due to the sometimes microcosm of the topic. I’m sure that @nlogan77.bsky.social and @vcreedsabretooth.bsky.social have some gems.

Highlight of the New England trip so far: Samuel Clemen’s (Mark Twain’s) house in Hartford, Connecticut. The inside tour was beyond amazing and informative.

Linda and I hit Merrill's Bookshop in Hallowell, Maine. Absolutely fantastic! I could have browsed for days. The best part? Meeting and chatting with owner John and discussing books and his journey as an independent bookshop owner. No internet sales (crushing) and cash or check only.😊

1/2 Mail call: An addition to my western history library that I’ll probably read in bits over time. They still do guided tours of the penitentiary (1872-1890, then a prison from 1890-1901), so need to trek up to Laramie and check out the building and museum.

Book haul: I’ve read Shirer’s “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”, but not this account of his time in Germany. The O’Reilly Crazy Horse book came highly rec. from a friend that has read extensively on him. Not an O’Reilly fan, but his clarity of writing about historical topics is top notch.

Linda treated me to an order of “three bean” blend.😉

@ksfphd.bsky.social and I last weekish briefly talked about the use of this brownish maroon background that graced some silver age books. It really makes for an eye catching drop and makes all the other colors stand out. 1967 on this one.

The “Black Elk Speaks” I’ve read many years ago, but I had borrowed it from a friend. The rest are new to me.

Meet Georgia. We just adopted her from a gentleman that was in hospice and the family couldn’t keep her. However, they were beyond wonderful and did pay for all the medical work she needed including the extraction of most of her teeth. She is 12ish and we already adore her.

I remember as a kid wanting to enjoy MAD Magazine. I’d buy one from time to time, but except for Spy v Spy, the one page Don Martin cartoons and the clever folding of the back cover, it didn’t draw me fully in. CRACKED on the other hand seemed to. Didn’t know why. Still don’t.

Today’s random lp listen. The Stones 5th U.S. release in 1965. Many reviewers find so-so. For me, this was the band “rawing” it out. Enjoyed every cut, including the live efforts. What say you @tananile.bsky.social

Linda and I doing a little “homework” before heading back east and making a stop at Twain’s house in Hartford, CT. We hope to follow that up next year with a trip to Hannibal, MO and take in his childhood home. Long and slow reading on this one by Powers, but first-rate writing.

Went with a buddy to The Annual Rocky Mountain Book and Paper Fair. Held a 1st ed. Huckleberry Finn, chatted with a dealer who helped catalog docs at the Little Bighorn National Museum, and bought four for my western library. My friend netted a rare one. (Orig. dust jacket is under reprinted one.)

Asked our son to text me a random band. Then I randomly picked of one of their LPs. Result? Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s ‘Nightingales And Bombers’. Blown away. Patient instrumentals, some Dylan and Boss songs, and oozed 70’s progressive rock. The lad did well wouldn’t you say @gdub1972.bsky.social ?

Yard work in the book. Time to rehydrate and relax with a who’s who Harvey lineup. These characters take me back to my early childhood. Linda enjoyed them as well. Her favorite was Wendy, while mine was The Ghostly Trio and The Witch Sisters. Loved the chaos they caused and how they were drawn.

Really enjoyed this one. Shame that Fred Rhoade’s Gabby Gobb candle didn’t burn very long. A handful of “Harvey Hits” like this one and some appearances in the short “Sad Sack Navy” run is about all that I can find.⚓️

Added to my WW2 library. “Spearhead” by Makos is for a buddy. It’s my favorite WW2 book of all time and the 3rd copy I’ve gifted. The next four just sounded fascinating. As for the Patton book? Not a fan of O’Reilly or him, but read his Kennedy book and found it quick and informative. We’ll see.

Pleased to add this one to the military humor collection. A DC attempt to compete with Archie. By issue 5 they had Howie enlist in the army to try and boost sales. By issue 18, it was over. This one is tied with another 6.0 as the highest graded. 🙏 @ksfphd.bsky.social for helping look this over.

🪖At the point where Sgt. Robert C. Dick, Sherman tank driver, just finished training in Hawaii and is about to ship out. I’ve read some on tank personal and battles in the European theater, but this is my first on the use of tanks in the Pacific. Easy read as Dick writes like he is talking to you.

Our 17 year old dachshund had an accident on her dog bed and we are adopting a 12 year old Bassett hound who we are meeting at a local vet, so tag teaming the washing of a dog bed and meeting our new family member at the vet on our 33rd Anniversary. No complaints. Love this gal! 🎊
