A hundred years ago, finishing high school was something most people didn’t do. Sixty years ago a diploma was still a competitive advantage. Now it’s societal failure when graduation rates aren’t close to 100%. Something similar is happening with post-secondary education.

We've now had two unpublished studies of #cellphonebans get ballyhooed as if they were evidence in support of the bans. A closer look at both has revealed that the impact was basically indistinguishable from zero. Thus it is with moral panics. Be wary, we'll be seeing more of the same.

Good threads. We used SESOIs pretty extensively in our recent registered reports (e.g. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...). We found plenty of "significant" effects, but ones that were smaller than our SESOI. 1/4

I say they’ve gone too far with so-called “fun size” candy. You know what’s fun, friends? An actual whole bar of chocolate.

I want to comment on a piece of research that came to my attention yesterday that I think is a reflection of endemic problems in our field. The study was published in a top-tier journal and was covered by the national press. It had a very large sample (N>30,000) and several yearly time points.

But here's, the thing, p values and significance become useless at such large sample sizes. When you're dividing the coefficient by the SE and the sample size is in the tens of thousands, EVERYTHING IS SIGNIFICANT. All you're testing is whether the coefficient is different than zero.

A bunch of headlines are proclaiming that you can boost your metabolism and you don't even have to exercise! Except, that's not really true. Let's look at the study. 1/n

Very cool issue on intensive longitudinal data, including a piece by @aidangcw.bsky.social and others on minimum sample size for estimating various parameters. Sometimes when we move beyond traditional self-report we neglect psychometrics and publish lots of noise. This work can help prevent that.

We got our first review stating that as p-curve was recently criticized, and z-curve was also not 'vetted by a real statistician', the method should not be trusted. No statistical tool could ever damage science as much as this horrendously flawed authority argument.
