I have them all. Academia is self-inflicted pain -- but also because we have the luxury of having a job in which pain inflicted from others (hierarchy, clients, customers, suppliers) is low to non-existent. So we do it ourselves.

Spot on! To different extents in US and EU, from the '50s onwards we *actively* worked to make cities more car-friendly, giving them more space, confining pedestrians to narrow sidewalks, banning bikes on roads, bulldozing homes to make way. Car supremacy was engineered. Time to reverse course.

Very useful work from Matti here. Publishers extract enormous rents from the community and in exchange provide us with bloated websites. Reducing their rent seeking is a large endeavor, but while we're on it at least we can streamline our user experience by ditching their bloat & frills. Thanks!

Kudos to Mark for highlighting the key issue. AI in Science: if you care about bare output -- more, faster, it's a boon. If you care about the journey and learning, it's a dead end. How we navigate this, and how we teach students to thrive in an AI world is the crucial question of our time.
