Plan U, for universal, is the necessary standard. Post everything as a preprint at or before point of submission. Then publish in any journal you want but never pay exorbitant APCs.

In the constant battle to resist the flood of AI generated junk, one recurring red flag is papers that devolve into long lists of bullet points and ideas in outline form. These are easy for LLMs to generate and it requires effort to turn them into prose, effort some authors do not expend.

We don't reject all work that uses LLMs for any purpose, but claiming the machine as a co-author crosses a line. It's very difficult to judge today and we are *deluged* with papers that are borderline at best.

Sometimes we get papers where a human author acknowledges an LLM co-author. We appreciate the honesty but reject these papers.

I posted a comment on Rubin's Theory & Society article, "Normativity is not a replacement for theory" in @socarxiv.bsky.social. I realize pointing this out may discourage other US-based folks from getting involved, norms being norms and all, but maybe in the current climate some brave Americans will be more willing to consider that institutions in other countries have some better ideas.

In Europe preprints and other open practices are institutionally embedded and normative (and funded). American sociology is very far behind. (ASA has always studiously avoided even mentioning SocArXiv.) Hats off to our European colleagues for their leadership, on this and other science matters.

How do institutional incentives and norms affect open science practices? Here's one: At present we have zero US university-employed academics volunteering to moderate at @socarxiv.bsky.social It's all early career Europeans (except me and @pamelaoliver.bsky.social, who is emeritus.)
