I was once complained about because I told a group to google things up for solving coding errors in a particular software package. A software package many of us learn by googling errors and reading manuals. They wanted precise answers for all their queries. I’m happy if they just use AI.

Ok, just to wrap this whole “AI is against the actual business of education”, a bit of a 🧵 When I became program director at UCSD, I inherited a legacy unit that had lost much of its old luster. What to do?

You know who also spoke about “the actual business of education”? The people shoving MOOCs down our throats 20 years ago.

I am less worried about AI in higher ed than about straight A high school students who don’t know how to add fractions, solve a system of equations, or have read more than 2 books in the last year going into college.

I mean, just to give you another example of how it’s not AI but **the system** which is broken: the math and reading comprehension of incoming freshmen is basically 5th grade from 30 years ago. That’s not AI. And that’s the real killer.

So, yes—I agree that many faculty and admin have succumbed to the siren songs of AI, but to say they aren’t interested in the actual business of education seems an argument that leads no-where. The “actual” business of education is not a clear cut, well defined object.
