What counts as essential travel? How does this differ across people? What level of mobility can be sustained within planetary boundaries? These researchers get closer to answering those questions than most. Wish this kind of thinking was more central to climate & transport policy making in the UK.

National Travel Survey findings for 2024 are released by DfT today. So much in there (as always) but my favourite stat is: > Average walking distance travelled was the highest on record since 2002 with 230 miles per person in 2024. This was an increase of 12% compared to 2019 (205 miles per person)

Defenders of car-centric road planning claim that highway widenings reduce emissions (b/c they lessen congestion) while slow urban streets increase emissions (b/c they worsen congestion). Neither of those assertions is true.

This is excellent to see from Sadiq Khan. The evidence is clear on 20mph: “… the number of people killed or seriously injured on London borough roads reduced by 34% following the implementation of 20mph speed limits, with the number of children killed falling by 75% (from four to one).“

Wow, this is actually surprising. 2024 still holds the record for most flights in a single day, and 2025 is largely tracking alongside 2024 for number of flights. Is the growth of the global aviation industry plateauing?
