One thing that I’ve learned in my study of backlash politics from Reconstruction through the Civil Rights Movement is that backlashers are a persistent bunch. The undoing of Reconstruction took several decades, and post-WWII backlashers looked back on that patient counterrevolution as a model.

The collective journalistic freakout over someone disliking a cafeteria sandwich at Oberlin or some Yale students asking their peers to be less racist at Halloween has generated far more copy and uproar than multiple universities illegally firing faculty for nonconservative speech they disliked.

It always comes back to Reconstruction. The secessionists and sympathizers should have been stripped of land and power and exiled. It would have happened had Lincoln lived. Not because he was a champion of equal rights but because he believed the evidence of his eyes. A trait few have shared since.

IMHO, the Supreme Court is a *bigger* problem than Trump, and it should be the primary target for reform. Trump and Congress would both be very different under a law-abiding SCOTUS, which would have stopped government action clearly animated by racism and racially gerrymandered districts.
