The thing, I don't think the student's position here is inherently frivolous. They have an argument! Outside the schoolhouse gates, misgendering someone even to their face is absolutely protected speech. But even Tinker acknowledged, schools are different. And this case is a good way to show how.

Saying "it's my political belief that this sort of harrassment is right and good to engage in" isn't a magic spell - or at least, it shouldn't be.

The irony is I'm a huge free speech guy! I just think you can't have order in a public school if you don't have tighter restrictions on speech than in the public square, because kids are forced to be there, and trans kids deserve equal protection from harassment at school to every other kid.
