I loved visiting the Billy Ireland last year. You wouldn’t think it would make a big difference to read Calvin and Hobbes strips from the original art, but they really are funnier that way

The difference between having a cat and having a dog is staggering. Having a dog is like having child who’s disgusting. Having a cat is like having a painting that’s mad at you.

The music of Seinfeld, divorced from the show itself, is nothing short of disgusting. Imagine if the show didn’t exist but the music somehow did. Hearing it, your face would twist in angry revulsion

BEN: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope. LUKE: Yoda spoke of another. BEN: Oh yeah he must’ve meant Ahsoka Tano, a fully trained warrior badass who’s alive just offscreen. She’s got two lightsabers LUKE: That’s badass. BEN: You only have one and you lost it

I took this ferry last decade just because I wanted to drive around Chappaquiddick. Total sinecure for the ferry operator, takes about a minute to go the length of a city block, can only exist because the locals think being a single ferry ride from the mainland isn’t enough to keep out the riffraff

The lesson of Watchmen is that if you're going to do a 400-page monthly series based around the nine-panel grid you need to find someone whose first professional drawings involved walking around buildings in London holding a theodolite to draw it

Non sequitur but the one time I saw Paul McCartney live (Hampden Stadium 2010!) I got this mental image that watching the Beatles back catalogue being performed by a Beatle was like there was a huge spaceship in orbit and he was the only person on the planet able to fly it

Sad to hear Gerry Conway has died. He played a big part in my becoming a comics fan, since one of the first issues I bought off a newsstand was written by him and had Spider-Man being shoved in a fridge and dropped down an elevator shaft. He was my first favourite comics writer. RIP

RIP Jim Wheelock, a good cartoonist and a great guy. He used to be found every year propping up the bar at various UK conventions and at AngoulĂŞme, where half the passers-by would think he was George R. R. Martin. Here he is with the man himself, in happier times

Sam Kieth did not bend for comics. Comics bent to him. I won't call his manner of drawing merely a style because that implies some level of artifice. Maybe not since Kirby had mainstream comics seen an artist with less filter between his imagination and the printed page.

So I read this pilot the other night and it really is incredibly bad. Which is baffling, because Nora and Lilla Zuckerman wrote the good season of Poker Face, and after they left that show to do Buffy the season without them wasn’t nearly as good. So what went wrong?

I feel like a good and socially useful writing prompt for sf writers would be to turn out a bunch of plausible scenarios where a new technology automates 40% of jobs and the result isn’t just "40% of people are unemployed forever; the hunger games"

The Canton Express in Glasgow. Walking distance from my flat, open until 5am most nights, huge amount of amazing food for not much money. I lived off their chicken in black bean sauce and crispy pork with gravy for years. Heartbroken when I went there one night and it had closed with no warning
