I really enjoyed this article. One of my favorite childhood memories is wandering the international terminals at JFK, looking at all of the different 747s. It is a beautiful plane and it still stops me in my tracks when I see one.

Here in KC, it's been so heartwarming to see the way Lawrence has caped for Algeria. There's been footage on the news of (admittedly blind drunk) Algerian fans openly crying about how much the love the city has shown them means to them. Pretty remarkable.

Of the ten MENA teams at the World Cup, six are last in their groups, a seventh (Algeria) is not last because of a win over another (Jordan), and two more (Iran and Egypt) are above only New Zealand. Their collective results: five wins, 14 losses, eight draws, and a -35 goal difference.

This World Cup has been a lesson to managers that if you are scared of embarrassing your iconic, but washed veteran by benching him (Koulibaly, Ronaldo, Neuer, Muslera), you'll actually end up embarrassing him even worse by playing him

Two things are true: 1. Stereotypically, the rest of South America generally dislikes Argentines for being arrogant. 2. Five of the six CONMEBOL teams at the World Cup have Argentine managers and the sixth (Brazil) would disband its federation before doing so.

Good piece. I'd quibble with Zidane having a four-year reign with the belt when he was often unproductive domestically (he's the Platonic ideal of a player for moments) and would give a couple years of that period to Rivaldo, who put up bigger numbers and was a key player on a World Cup winner.

It's fucking remarkable that we spent years arguing about whether we should keep Gregg Berhalter and it took getting grouped in a home Copa America by Panama to finally force US Soccer to make the most obvious decision in recorded history.

To address the references to the 2002 team: 1. That team would have been grouped if not for a nothing-to-play-for South Korea scoring against Portugal; and 2. The manner of performance matters. This team dominates territorially in a way that ā02 did not.
