Oh, the wondrous Stilt Jack by the brilliant John Thompson—a collection of 38 ghazals published after his harrowing death. He taught English lit at Mount Allison Uni in New Brunswick (a province where I lived for almost a decade). He finished Stilt Jack just before his death April 26, 1976, aged 38.

Love how Frank O’Hara references Rilke as “young Rene Rilke” here. And how O’Hara defamiliarizes proper nouns by spelling them at slant or altering names slightly, as if to mark them with winks.

Got caught in the thunderstorm just now out walking the dog with my wife. We were immediately soaked. We ran, screaming. The dog was having the time of her life. My wife and I kissed on the porch, laughing and dripping wet, the dog barking and jumping. Kids starting thru the window.

In US schools, the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) is barely covered. More time is spent on the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). But, in Mexican textbooks, it's covered in depth, esp. the loss of Texas, California, New México, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah to the U.S. Many were killed for land.
