Remembering that I once read this article about a famous Black academic who shall not be named (perennial Ivy League type of guy) who proudly proclaimed that one of his best friends is a colleague who’s very clearly a right wing extremist. This was supposed to be a heartwarming story.

It really does seem that collegiality in academia parallels collegiality in politics. That you can be a white supremacist coup-supporter and a "liberal" in Sunstein's "big tent" is basically a distillation of everything that's morally and ethically wrong with Western modernity.

The part where Sunstein tried to "defer to" (hide behind) his wife on a basic question regarding human rights and Chotiner was like "You can defer to her but I'm only asking because it's the first line of your book."

There is a strange affinity between Chotiner's interview with Sunstein about his "big tent liberalism" (he waxes poetic about a friendship with Kissinger) and Ezra Klein's lionization of Kirk as someone who did "politics the right way". Someone should write a book about these weird (white) people.

I think the piece does a great job of also encapsulating (without saying so directly) why we should be wary of "cancel culture" discourse, especially as weaponized and wielded by the far right. Cancelling bigots (from polite company and actual companies) has its place, excesses notwithstanding.
