I'm borrowing @elinm.bsky.social's bike and it cycles so easily compared to the fucked up old omafietsen I'm used to riding in the Netherlands I was genuinely convinced it was an electric bicycle for a moment.

Kind of annoyed by this situation, but it is what it is, I'm sure it'll turn out fine in the end, and it's an interesting experience in and of itself.

So basically if you change your legal name abroad after having previously lived in Japan, it's a good idea to bring your old passport and/or residence card with you to Japan, it turns out. Especially if your government never issued you some sort of "I changed my legal name" certificate.

Registering my address at the ward office and the clerk came up to me like "you've had a residence card before, right? Was it with the same info...?" and now things take a little longer and he wanted to see my old passport/residence card if possible. It's kinda interesting.

Today a Japanese person complimented me on my *English* ! "I thought you were from an English speaking country, based on your pronunciation", spoke the man, after he finally guessed my country of origin correctly. "You don't speak the way those Spanish people or Germans do."
