Unpopular publishing opinion but if a short fiction magazine is gonna take longer than a month to respond, have a limited submission period, and/or pay very little, then they have no reasonable right to forbid you from submitting your story to another publication at the same time.

Earlier this year, we were able to increase writer pay to $75 per essay because of how much support we got from the community (many of whom came right here from Bluesky). We'd love to pay $100 per essay in 2026.
