I see devs get prickly about playtesting because they're afraid of being "focus grouped" or having the edges sanded off. The point of playtesting is to see if what you intended was what the player actually experienced, and there's no other way to find this out than putting it in front of someone.

Most of us did not choose to write or draw or design so that we could put products on the shelf. We chose to do it because it’s a set of skills we enjoy exercising, that give us fulfillment. It’s like asking a pro pitcher to just let a machine pitch for them. Fuck off and give me the ball.

When I was working on Thirsty Suitors, I actually took time to write some real-looking placeholder dialogue for the battles. I'm not a good writer, but it helped me figure out design and engineering needs. Automating it would have slowed things down much more than taking a couple writing hours.

"Where do ideas come from?" I don't know how other folks come up with stuff but for me it starts with some idea that seems interesting and then the research part of it to figure out the world, looking up photos/artwork that could evoke the idea. Doing that research leads to unexpected results.

Concept art, ideating, temp and placeholder art is where the magic happens. It's also a place for more junior folks on a team to contribute work and get better at it. There is no GenAI replacement for that experience and collaboration. It's going to hurt the team and project in the long term.

I am a little disappointed when the conversation is focused around "it's art not porn!" because the adult games devs get very little support but have been dealing with this for far longer, and they've been sounding the alarm for that deplatforming coming for other games (such as LGBTQ+ content).

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.
