From time to time I call myself as temperamentally conservative, by which I mean I've a cautious approach to policy, am skeptical of attempts to change human nature, and think institutions like gov'ts and churches are basically positive forces. In the US this makes me a straight ticket Democrat.

When you vote, you are saying that you ultimately trust this person’s judgement to weigh your interest against the interests of the rest of their constituents, as well as the interests of the country. And, truthfully, against their own political interest. That’s the job of an elected official.
