Slava Ukraini. America delenda est. Russia delenda est. People's Republic of China delenda est. Greenland is next on Trump's hit list. Then Canada. The PRC will probably hit Taiwan soon. Russia is already at war with Ukraine. Fuck them. We don't need them. We can build a world without them.

In the same way White Americans would rather burn down the country than live in a predominantly nonwhite one, most Americans would rather end all life on earth than be asked to care about other countries.

This gentleman, a US Congressman from Florida who has called for the mass expulsion of Muslims, is a graduate of Harvard (Larry Summers, Alan Dershowitz), which must be so proud of him. If Gretzky wants to rehabilitate himself, he could drop round to Fine's office and elbow his teeth in.

Cross border connections with American liberals have largely had a numbing effect on their Canadian counterparts rather than a galvanizing one though. We would be much better served by dispelling the common assumption that Democrats can or will save us, and recognizing that we are on our own.

Canadian liberals (particularly those with higher levels of political engagement) often consume a lot of American political media and have a resulting tendency to place all their expectations and hopes on American progressives. This fosters a sense of complacency that we canβt afford right now

At the risk of moving into the discourse a 2nd time today, the fact that a lot of Americans in the replies see this as a bit of fun trash talk between rivals kind of illustrates the extent to which maybe a lot of Americans aren't reading the room in how they are viewed internationally at this point

Many Americans seem to have the same view of Canada and Canadians as Russians take of Ukraine and Ukrainians. At best this is a sort of bemused patronizing attitude. But at it's worst, well, many MAGAs are becoming American vatniks and take an overtly hostile, aggressive view towards us.

Canada is a country of 41 million people, and is also the world's second largest country by land area. We are a vast country with a small population, and rich natural resources that many may covet. For many economic and political reasons, Canada must grow its population to 100 million or so.

Canada is a G8 economy of 40 million people, if we canβt sort out a conventional deterrent in the near term (even one with long odds of victory but a certainty of making losing very very painful and protracted for Washington) then weβre not likely to successfully midwife a nuclear arsenal.

Borden believed that Canada had to do its part in a great battle for the future of the world, and whether it would be dominated by autocracy and oligarchy (his words) or a vision of open and cooperative democracies, bound by law and mutual endeavour. Shades of the Davos speech.

Given the discussions doing the rounds on American threats towards Canada, national defence etc., Iβd be remiss not to promote PM Bordenβs speech to the Halifax Empire Club, shortly after the outbreak of the Great War. Some unfortunately timeless things in his worldview and rhetoric:

Obviously part of it is due to being a melting pot but there's a rather patronizing view that Canadians are, at best, viewed as temporarily embarrassed Americans whose big difference is saying "eh" every other sentence and a preference for hockey over football.

This view isn't completely new. There's a strain of incredulous and outraged American thought going back to 1775 that simply refuses to believe Canada does not want to become part of the US. It was relatively dormant in the immediate post WWII period, but it never fully went away.
