If this is true, this is a very worrying story. It may also require a certain updating of priors in how we consider threats to our sovereignty from the US.

This would be a great time to have anything resembling a competent opposition party that could loudly and credibly accuse Carney and the Libs of bending their knees to polish Trump's shoes. Who's leading the BQ right now?

One of the silliest things about the AI utopians is the belief that completely alienating everyone from the economy will somehow work out better than completely alienating everyone from politics did.

The Iranians really do not seem to understand that as long as the United States economy is not getting absolutely wrecked, we will just keep doing whatever we feel like doing, and what we feel like doing is clearly killing Iranians, no matter how many ceasefires we sign.

My pet peeve is dialogue like: "Father, why must we sit through this boring ritual?" "Well, my son the prince, you and I know that it's bullshit and that all that matters is the exercise of power..." No! That's the opposite of a medieval mentality! It's not Brutally Accurate!

My own medievalist take is that "accurate" is often taken to mean, "the color is washed out and be everyone's covered in mud," but otherwise everyone still acts like modern people in costume. I think that Eggers's The Northman is the only movie to go balls to the wall to show a medieval mentality.

I got some thoughts on this Wanting domestic manufacturing is a pan-ideological obsession in American politics. As you say theyβre giving companies a fuckton of money to onshore, and now that that rubicon has been crossed, we gotta assume thatβs permanent American policy.

One of the big differences between Edmonton and Calgary that nobody really talks about is the formerβs incredible diversity in religious architecture. Everywhere else in Alberta Iβve been itβs usually a bunch of random non-denom churches, a few Catholic and the odd Anglican or Lutheran.

Obviously this is excellent, detailed, and in many ways pretty terrifying - essential reading for anyone with even a passing concern for literature, thought, learning etc. I would only add that there is an even broader crisis here around attention.

The End of Reading Is Here
Optimists once believed that universal literacy was inevitable. Now it seems that the age of reading might be a short anomaly in human history.

I find Iβm becoming less and less sympathetic to the self soothing narratives theyβre generating because Iβve noticed they instil an increasingly sedative effect on the rest of us. For instance your average Canadian Bulwark listener thinks the worst of it is gonna be wrapped up by the midterms.

Iβm not saying it would tradeoff free, Iβm not saying it would be easy, but you make a few changes to liability law and Meta goes away, YouTube goes away. the first mover advantages they have will not return. These are breakable systems. None of this is inevitable.

Again, all of this is a policy choice. Social media is not the printing press, itβs not alcohol: itβs a network, not a technology. States break or suppress networks all the time. You donβt need The Revolution to change this, you donβt need an authoritarian state. You just need a few changes to law.

This is why, as I've been arguing since the start of 2025, Canadians need to update our threat model and start thinking about American tech the same way we think about Chinese or Russian products. The threat from Huawei is real, but it's naive to think the same concerns don't apply to Starlink.

Trump isn't actually going to send tanks over the 49th parallel... But the banter is a signal that Canadian sovereignty is no longer recognized by America's foreign policy establishment. Things may shift a bit under the next administration, but the goalposts have changed.

Canada underestimates the kind of repressed rage that might be levelled at it. We share enough in common with the US that one half of America will see in us everything it hates about the other. But we are different enough that certain protections for fellow Americans will not apply to us.

The answer is of course almost always no, because if he meanr it, allies would be obliged to take it seriously and inflict consequences that would inevitably damage American global standing and power projection as a whole, rather than being micro-targeted to influence eight swing voters in Idaho.
