A lot of the “but what about” arguments that contend with lowering speed limits do not acknowledge one crucial detail. Taking even one car off the road is going to trump most every other thing you can do for safety/environment. Low speed limits encourage mode shift. Next stop Chicago!

I want to spotlight my hometown for an exciting step toward safer streets. Fairfax county is looking to slow automobile speeds on the same street I biked to middle school on. Twelve-year-old me would have greatly benefited from this, rather than the cars speeding past me early in the morning.

Photos of congestion as a result of the ongoing TFL strike in London taken by some of my family members. I am very supportive of the labor organizing of TFL employees, but wanted to highlight the crucial role of transit - without public transit, other modes become over-burdened and congested.

That is why transit is so good for cities! When cities expand and densify, which is what cities do, transit becomes safer, more convenient, and nicer. City-dwellers oppose more people when they rely on cars, because that means more traffic. Fundamentally, the car is not a proper urban vehicle.

I know I’ve said this before, but I sure do love riding in packs of bikes on my morning commute in ways I never did when driving in car traffic.

This is an underappreciated point. Cars take up such disproportionate road *space* compared to the share of road *users* who are in them, so we underestimate non-car travel. Bikes and buses are carrying a much larger share of the people using the road than you think. They're just not in your way.
