There's no such thing as open AI models under capitalism.

Open models by and large do not deserve to be called open (yes there are exceptions). Even so, Bluesky will never implement so-called open models in Attie. If they did, their target audience would not use the app; they would build or discover an alternative that uses a "better quality" closed AI.

AI has unambiguous utility; that's what makes it such a potent vector. One cannot lean in to AI without also welcoming dystopia; power and economics are aligned against the more hopeful outcomes. The virtues of AI are immaterial; AI is one part of a complex strategy to exert control over humans.

I can see the reasons behind this push, whether I agree with them or not. But then, why not go all-in? Why not make it a fundamental requirement that Attie *only* use open models. From my understanding, the current system is to use Claude. Why not push the limits from day 1?

I think the risk is that the open models, and often unintentionally, become an excuse to keep using the proprietary hosted models and all the stuff that comes along with them. That they exist is a foil to a lot of complaints about the AI industry, despite few really using them
