That's been one of the disappointing fallouts of everything going on, I'm seeing some devs say "don't build things on ATProto" because now it's associated with Bluesky leadership's image. Which is unfortunate, since there are really awesome things being built on ATProto and

The developer community (especially those who don’t work for Bluesky) around ATproto have made some of their biggest strides ever in recent days and weeks, and were building huge momentum, and all of it has been overshadowed by this bullshit. Jeopardizing that work? *That* is a tech story.

Aside from all the moderation drama of late, I really love ATProtocol and respect the hell out of the people who built it. I think it's the future of the open web. I think it's an incredible tool for maintaining freedom of speech and association as we barrel into this tech-oligarch future.

Blacksky has their own appview, but they import the default moderation labels (including bans) for now from Bluesky. They could implement a local override (or switch source of moderation labels) and then their users would be properly independent

whenever posts are hidden from view, it's part of moderation (manual or auto), or the servers are having trouble keeping up. i wish i were around then to poke at things at the protocol level. i'm not a mod but your post isn't even in a grey area, so it's hard to imagine they'd hide it on purpose

It feels like the internet‘s cooked us into presenting every position in the strongest moral terms and responding to every disagreement as an all-out attack that must be annihilated before it destroys everything and it seems not great

fascinating that "no, the computer is not alive" and "yes, it's questionable to gleefully say anti-computer phrases modeled after racial slurs" are two thoughts people are struggling to reconcile

A little proof of concept I've been working on, it's a version of Bluesky that you can run locally, even on your laptop, that pulls just the data you care about from the firehose, indexes it, and provides you an interface to view and interact with posts.

I think it is possible (and ideologically consistent) to dislike leadership without completely believing that the entire site is a Zuck or Elon-level trap, and. without being abusive to atproto devs. There's some real tech here, there's community, and we can do something with that.

bluesky's problem is that 99.9% of its users just want Literally Twitter (2015) and don't even know what ATProto is, so "we want to run the site in this specific way and genuinely encourage people who don't like it to migrate off & run things how they want, no hard feelings" will never work

Alpha Testing is going well! We're successfully overcoming hurdles and moving bigger and bigger accounts. You absolutely should not dismiss the AT Protocol technology that runs this place as boring nerd stuff, because that is the exact technology we are going to need to ensure that usable social media that isn’t controlled by Nazis continues to exist.

i wrote down the process of resolving an at:// URI step by step. turns out, it's a great way to learn how the AT protocol works!

but it's not vaporware? see blacksky, deer social, northsky et al. nothing stops you from moving your pds and moving your relay and appview. yes, the majority of the community is here, but the option to fork is there.

Blacksky Algorithms is communal infrastructure.

Discover is an algorithm, suggested follows uses an algorithm, automated moderation systems that keep the site usable rely on, among other things, machine learning. The app already uses ML, and we need these systems to serve users better.

i just made my first atproto app with the @slices.network alpha. it shows the list of last played tracks from @teal.fm across the atmosphere. i needed to write 25 lines of code for this to work.
