Yes, For You was down for 30 minutes - the computer hanged and I had to reboot it to bring it up again. Not clear what caused it. One option is that there is an issue with power management. My system drive already used to have random hangs for ~30-60 seconds due to power state transitions.

A small tweak to reduce "Show less like this" in For You by 36%

The For You feed will be down for a few minutes. I need to restart the computer to try resolve Steam segfaults (probably another nvidia driver update?) Will use this opportunity to enable RAM EXPO profile (4800 -> 6000) which got reset during the CPU upgrade.

Tested today how much difference the 3D V-cache makes for For You and 3D V-Cache is indeed helpful. When I pin the algorithm to run only on CCD 0 (3D V-Cache) I get 25% faster runtime than when running on CCD 1 (standard cache) So it did make sense to get 9950X3D instead of the 9950X.

🤦‍♂️Sorry, For You was down due to a new code change that I implemented yesterday and I discovered the feed was down this morning.

For You is down due to the migration to a new VPS server. Trying to figure out what is wrong. It was very close to working out but Claude went off rails a bit :)

I'm using a VPS on OVH to host linklonk.com which serves the For You feed. The real processing is happening on my home PC and the VPS is mostly responsible for proxying the traffic. It means that the VPS can be fairly small: 2 vCores, 4GB ram, 80GB storage has been fine for my needs.

In For You I started tracking the post author and the quoted post id. I want to use these to improve the diversity of For You. What do you think should be the distance: 1. between posts of the same author 2. between quotes of the same post ?

This appears to be common feedback. Also, content with most "show less like this" appears to be NSFW content. I'm adding tracking of self-tagged and Bluesky moderation labels on posts. With this information I should be able to demote/filter NSFW labeled content if you have not liked such content.

It would be great if Bluesky published the IP addresses that they use to make requests to feed generators. I'd like to increase the per-ip request limits. Right now I watch the Nginx error logs and add them one at a time. So far I've got: 67.213.161.34 209.249.133.122 38.120.64.66 147.123.139.102

Made some improvements that should help For You handle such load spikes in the future: 1. 2x more powerful CPU 2. Bigger in-memory cache sizes so we don't need to read from the DB for >99% of the requests 3. Use a simpler version of the algorithm when under load

Here are the results of the quoted experiment after 9 days: - 5.6% fewer users are pressing "show less like this" (statistically significant with p=0.95) - 7.36% fewer "show less like this" interactions (68,195 -> 63,173) - 1.64% more likes on posts (2,319,961 -> 2,357,938)

The For You feed is going to be down while I'm upgrading the CPU from AMD 7900 (12 core) to AMD 9950X3D (16 core). This should increase how many users it can serve by ~50%-100%. If all goes well it should be back up in an hour or two.

@bsky.app created a featured feed post for For You but it overloaded my computer and they agreed to delete it for now. The request processing time jumped from 0.2s to 50s. It is getting down to 45s, but it is not recovering super well.

The For You feed has been spreading like a wild fire yesterday and today and got 10K likes - which is crazy compared to the 6K likes it accumulated since ~May. Thanks to all the likes, For You overtook the defunct Skygaze feed in the search results - no more confusion about which is the real one.

Here is why Bluesky is seeing a lot of activity today:

In For You the "show less like this" feedback is currently only used to disconnect you from people who liked that post. The effect is that the likes of those curators will have less weight for you and you will see less of what they like in For You.

For the last ~25 days I've been running an experiment on For You that gave more weight to "show less like this". The results are: -3.22% fewer "show less like this" (20,957 -> 20,282) +17.24% more "show more like this" (4,083 -> 4,787) +1.91% more likes (1,067,971 -> 1,088,331)

How is this new "dislike" interaction going to be sent to custom feeds like For You? Would it be a new interaction type like "app.bsky.feed.defs#interactionDislike" or the existing "app.bsky.feed.defs#requestLess"? @internet.bsky.social

I've seen a few people complain about For You being too good at surfacing people's alt accounts. I think to solve this we can let people opt out their account posts from appearing in For You. If you want your account posts to not appear on For You feel free to DM me with "remove me from For You".

For You now keeps better track of posts that you've seen. If you accidentally refresh it the post that was just there will be gone. If you ever need to go back to the recommendations you've seen in For You - use this simple feed:

Indeed, I'm seeing a lot of app.bsky.feed.defs#interactionSeen in the For You logs! With this change released I can clean up a bunch of hacks (based on scrolls and likes) I used to infer seen posts.

What is between O(1) and O(N)? It is usually O(log(N)). This sounds like a tree. What if the sequence was represented as a tree? Each node has a fixed length vector, each leaf is a sequence element.

I started an A/B test for this idea. 50% of the For You users will see posts ranked by the new logic. The goal of this experiment is to reduce volatility of For You caused by your most recent likes. I will share the results in a week or so.
