As a longtime faculty member still new to having (several) admin positions, I have muscle memory that expects things to quiet down in the summer. When that doesn't happen ... it hurts.

The fashion for kitchen islands was energized by the early TV cooking shows of Julia Child and Graham Kerr. The island is a stage upon which one mounts a performance, for an audience, of domestic mastery, AND—in the dreaded “open concept”—stands watch over the inmates of a panopticon.

I think obviously alt text can/should be a mostly solved problem with AI and I don’t think badgering people about it does much but I feel like misleading, joke-y, “I need extra space to be witty and annoying” use of alt text is some of the most asinine behavior tbh

Two skeptical software developers at a rationalist tech co-op try to optimize their love life using A/B tests, decision matrices, and Bayesian priors, only to discover that the heart doesn't follow a pull request. Acceptance Criteria. In theaters this summer.

i love thinking about what an ancient philosopher would say about machine intelligence since they were so obsessed w ethics, and genuinely believed intelligence expressed thru material correspondence. i land somewhere btwn “what are the virtues to engage w this?” and “ohh new planetary instrument!”

I'm struck how this account of climbing Mt Everest in 1952 echoes what astronauts say they miss on long-duration ISS missions: "a desire...to see grass and water and leaves once more"

The man who saw the future: the legacy of cultural theorist Mark Fisher
Touching on everything from late-stage capitalism to Adele, the work of the late writer is proving increasingly influential. Now a documentary on him is looking to live up to his ideals
