Now I've finished that I'm moving on to finishing Infinite Ryvius which from the first 3 episodes looks to be actually fucking awesome

It did a final episode that was a "where are they all now" kind of montage but the answer was mostly "actually kind of fucked up and trying really hard to not let it get to them" which I deeply respected

Self-actualization is important. But sometimes looking back at what people in non-political but dominantly leftie spaces I was in, it looked like a therapy-speak, social justice skin slapped on 80s “Me Decade” stuff.

Just from personal observation, I think there are strong links to the male loneliness epidemic and the way that hanging out with the dudes became perpetual roast sessions. Young dudes insulting each other for laughs as the default way of bonding leading to older men with no friend groups.

Relatedly, I recall a lot of "the joy of canceling plans" jokes and memes from the 2010s and now folks are talking about a loneliness epidemic, and, well...

I feel lots of things that felt like, were billed as, self-actualization read in retrospect as canaries in the coal mine for the fraying commitments we owe to each other as members of a society.
