is there a go-to reference on analysis of repeated cross section data where questions vary slightly over time? (think something like the GSS where you might have some underlying concept you're measuring -- generalized trust -- but you might have different questions in diff waves to construct it)

This is a marketing gimmick but I guess I’m not sure who the object of the gimmick.
