@nws.noaa.gov Director Ken Graham presented on NOAA’s modeling grand challenge at #AMS2026 this morning. He announced that the NWS is moving to MPAS as its modeling dynamical core, with his #1 moonshot goal being a global, fully coupled 3-km Earth prediction system using MPAS.

A horrific accident early Saturday morning left a car in the side of an NWS office and the office relying on the NWS service backup system. Service backup is important in situations like this - but also is being increasingly used due to NWS staffing and infrastructure issues. tinyurl.com/4txuyhbz

Reminder that the Tsunami Warning Centers are part of the National Weather Service. It would be nice to have them fully funded.

This is a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction zone megathrust event. And it is another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku in 2011.

Few things get under my skin like implications of not caring about people. Scientists, civil servants, emergency managers, and so many more are folks who prioritize serving the public. Like it's part of every single thing we do. We're not here for the clicks or the followers. We're here for people.

This is so frustrating because it almost certainly played no role in this specific disaster. However, over the long term, this is a problem. And the active and proposed budget cuts further imperil this work. But trying to separate the two is impossible.

Need more accounts like this to counter false narratives out there about warnings

we need to have a hard, serious conversation about the *profusion* of Amber, Silver, and Blue Alerts many people get, and how they may be pushing people to turn off vital emergency alerts on their devices entirely.

Another issue here is mismatch between public expectation & scientific reality re: what's possible in predicting localized convective extremes (i.e., severe/torrential t-storms). Days/environments supportive of such risk are predictable; exact timing/location/intensity of subsequent extremes is not.

All true: - NOAA funding cuts prohibit the agency to run at full capacity - Remaining NOAA employees doing exceptional / heroic work - Extreme events happen; sometimes unexpectedly - 20th century infrastructure is inadequate for today's climate - Finger pointing as an event is ongoing? Shameful.

In response to the tragically devastating floods in Texas yesterday & today, I've seen questions asking how is it possible that the NWS was able to predict floods from Helene days in advance, but yesterday's storms did not have nearly as much of a lead time. Short answer - very different phenomena:

While the NWS isn’t to blame, it’s as bad to blame political affiliation. The flood was a worst case scenario of a highly vulnerable area at night with a hazard that models can’t pinpoint accurately in advance. Are there lessons to be learned? Sure. But focus on improving for the future (1/2)

There have been claims that NOAA/NWS did not foresee catastrophic TX floods--but that's simply not true. This was undoubtedly an extreme event, but messaging rapidly escalated beginning ~12 hrs prior. Flood Watch mid PM, "heads up" outlook late PM, flash flood warnings ~1am.

The second is that the NWS historically has done a very good job at that forecast contextualization (outreach to local governments, emergency managers, outdoor recreation facilities, etc.). But that's one of the first things to go away when offices are critically understaffed.

The forecast was solid. With a flash flood watch out the afternoon before this was not missed. They should know that locally higher amounts are always possible when you get training thunderstorms and that models cannot predict exact amounts and locations.
