Hurricane Erin's maximum wind speed may have decreased from its peak as a category 5 hurricane, but the storm is getting larger! Here's the evolution of Hurricane Erin's size according to NHC's estimates of 34-knot (tropical storm force) wind extent from the 15 UTC advisories during 11-17 August:

12:15 PM EDT, 8/17: #HurricaneErin, currently experiencing eyewall replacement cycles and has weakened to Category 3 (125 MPH max sustained winds). The @nws.noaa.gov also designated a new disturbance in the eastern #AtlanticOcean, which will also enter favorable conditions. #HurricaneSeason2025

Tropical storm #Erin might have the satellite characteristics that befit the current classification of a ~50 mph tropical storm, but the combination of deep convection w/ cloud tops approaching -80°C and more of an annular shape is indicative that gradual strengthening may be imminent.
