The Storm Prediction Center did upgrade portions of the Mid-Atlantic region to a Moderate Risk (Level 4 out of 5) in their Day 2 Convective Outlook The last time a Day 2 Moderate Risk was issued for this area was in June 2013 (for the June 12-13 Derecho event)

The Day 3 Convective Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center mentioned the possibility of upgrading portions of the Mid-Atlantic region to a Moderate Risk (Level 4 out of 5) in subsequent outlooks The last Day 2 Moderate Risk for the Mid-Atlantic was June 2013 (the June 12-13, 2013 Derecho)

With NWS damage surveys completed yesterday, Oklahoma has officially set the record for the most confirmed tornadoes ever in the month of March with 20

The Mid-Atlantic region is currently in a Day 4 30% risk from the Storm Prediction Center This is only the second time that this area has been in this level of a risk at the Day 4 issuance (available records back to early 2015) The last time this Day 4 30% issuance occurred was June 2, 2016

In case you missed it, the viral hail report in Kankakee, Illinois that was challenging the record for largest recorded hailstone ever (8 inches - Vivian, SD) is gone However, Illinois does have a new state-record hailstone (also from Kankakee) with a preliminary maximum size of 6.14 inches

Busy start to the year for severe weather in Oklahoma Through March 7, we’ve had the second most tornado warnings issued in the state on record to date and a tie for most severe thunderstorm warnings issued in the state to date Can’t thank the folks at the NWS offices enough for all their efforts

NWS Norman surveyed four tornadoes from yesterday’s (March 5, 2026) severe weather event, which included two EF-2 tornadoes (Fairview and Helena) and two EF-1 tornadoes (Wakita and Orienta/Cleo Springs) Average lead time for the tornadoes approximately ranged from 12-40 minutes
