We make fun of MCU nerds comparing Captain America movies to '70s political thrillers, but comparing Waititi's Thor to 1980's Flash Gordon has done incalculable damage to people's definitions of colorful sci-fi/fantasy action romps. This new He-Man movie is further proof of that

For those outside the Twin Cities, the person posting this GoFundMe is a member of Minneapolis city council (and among the many locals doing absolutely heroic resistance to ICE), so it's legit.

On his birthday, we remember the great DeForest Kelley, who played Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy on the original Star Trek, The Animated Series, TNG, and in 6 films. He once had ambitions to be a doctor, but became an actor instead, appearing in many Westerns—often as a villain.

My hot take is that this idea that heroes dont kill has indoctrinated several generations into believing that violence is never the answer and that the status quo is not only worth defending, it is in fact an imperative to do so, and anyone threatening it is always a villain

The no kill rule is there to stop comic artists having to invent new bad guys, but its specific use now is very much a liberal idea - namely, the saintly vision that every successful protest is calm and non-violent.

"show don't tell" isn't *useless*, but it has never been an elemental principle of fundamental writing advice. it's a fairly modern literary idea, primarily spread by various writers' workshops in the mid-20th century, the vast majority of which were heavily sponsored by or even founded by CIA guys.

finally someone shows up with an actual attempt to roast me in the quotes. (it's a reply, alas, but i'll take it.) i'm being flippant for rhetorical effect, but nonetheless describing an objective, factual reality of the advice's origin in CIA-funded programs!

How Creative Writing Programs De-Politicized Fiction
In the shadow of the Cold War, the rise of creative writing programs and ‘show don’t tell’ philosophy drained fiction of its political bite.
