Agree there is no one best assessment metric but worse, a paper's quality is not even objective. Different people can get different utility from one paper Eg a synaptic physiologist vs a genomicist vs a pharma researcher could pull different insights from a paper linking synaptic genes to autism

Central to our philosophy at bioRxiv and medRxiv is decoupling dissemination and evaluation, so _we_ will not rank papers. But 3rd-party discovery services - from familiar tools like Google to qed - will always be entry points to our corpus. It'll be interesting to see which are adopted. 5/n

Suggestions - Delete the 1% entire thing asap. Sorry. - Use the concept of Hidden Gems instead as framed in your white paper, to highlight papers that were published in journals ranked lower than what they deserved. This category is exactly where your quantitative metric can have a positive impact

Would love to see this! as a journalist who writes across fields in neuroscience and psychology, I often find researchers who don't know other researchers doing amazingly close work in different fields who should know each other..

The only "smart search engine" I've found has been finding people like you online. People with expertise beyond my own have fueled my breadth of interesting reading! Combined with features like Lists showing only posts from those people, I escape the algorithm recommendations completely!
