Once again: close an area to cars, business *increases*. Every time. And yet every new proposal to close an area to cars meets the same resistance from business owners. I'm starting to wonder whether business owners really are rational self-interest maximizers, I tell you!

People refuse to believe it and most who do believe it usually shrug it off but US prisons and jails are in fact torture chambers. Conditions are HORRIFIC across the board. People are OK with this on the whole.

I feel the same way about AI as I do about the internet—both could be incredibly valuable contributions to society if they’re managed for the public good. In the hands of fascist tech billionaires, they’re a threat the civilization. It’s not the tech, it’s the ownership structure.

In some ways worse than today’s kayfabe parade of right wing operatives. They’re more dishonest, but bad faith is what they do. News reporters and analysis playing dumb about the context here have no excuse.

While a candidate,
@mayor.nyc.gov
pledged to commit 0.5% of the city’s budget to public libraries. Unfortunately, Mayor Mamdani has broken this promise in his preliminary FY27 budget, released yesterday, where he allocated 0.39% to libraries. This amount is well below the promised 0.5%

Very interesting proposal! First blush reactions: - building on symbols and prototypes feels very thoughtful, the right primitives for safe independent extension and “going with the grain of JS” - not sure I agree that the sugar needed is for creating getters for *all* methods of a protocol

Too bad there's no opposition party that could run a 48 hour Youtube telethon program with 48 elected officials each programming one hour to point out the awfulness of the war on Iran. That would definitely not get any media or other attention.

I don't want or need a president that silences the conversations that protect people that aren't "culturally normal.🤡" That's how fascists chip away at the base of good people. I do want and need a president that will prioritize protecting the most vulnerable. That's how you protect people.

This is anecdotal, but I've recently noticed several small, plucky outlets that formed in the past few years get big stories/scoops — or at least get more attention for doing so. These are mostly worker-owned, subscription-based publications. Seems like a good sign for journalism if they do well.

I think Edge is halfway there with workspaces (synced, shareable, named, persistent groups of tabs) but I really need browsers to reinvent themselves as tab managers. Why are tab groups the most granular option? why can't I tag tabs with icons and notes to remind myself why I've left them open?

Julie K. Brown deserves every last flower. She has done so, so much for so many survivors of atrocity, for lighting truth where those with power tried to bury it. This is what a free press is, does, can do. But it takes so much risk & guts. She is a brave hero and we are so indebted to her.

Yes it’s Valentine’s Day. But it’s also the chosen birthday of Frederick Douglass who was born in 1818 on a plantation in Talbot County, Maryland. He escaped from slavery & rose to become the most eloquent and forceful voice for the abolition of slavery & for Black voting rights in the U.S.
