these tools are what we make of them. we can't assume that because we are acting in benign ways, that everyone using the tools will do the same. People can't rely on only that. We need to discuss as a community how we govern labelers and community moderation. @scoiattolo.mountainherder.xyz

Blacksky's moderation tools grew from 2 labels and added new ones through a democratic process where people voted on new labels via their People's Assembly. Labels constantly get updated because things change and T&S needs to always have a finger on the pulse @drkalyncoghill.blacksky.team

what’s refreshing about #atmosphereconf is how interdisciplinary the subjects and speakers are - it’s not all code but instead showcasing the roles of scientists, journalists and creators. the community is multi-faceted and have a shared interest in combatting misinformation and abuse.

I hope today during my talk people interested in content moderation understand the importance of community trust and the true meaning of being proactive in trust & safety and not reactive. I stand on the fact that our moderation is one of the best I’ve seen across all platforms. Full stop.

What may be the most heartening part of #AtmosphereConf, besides the community, is that it's a *technical* conference at which people present on politics, authoritarianism, epistemic challenges (in the opening keynote!). Because, for technologists, *that's* the job.

This isn't even that new. In 2009 a friend of mine had the chance to redo a lab report and then was sent to academic affairs because it came back 90% plagiarized (from the original submission). Overreliance on this stuff is the laziest possible pedagogy and turns the teacher into a cop.
