It really does make sense prototyping with the featureless cube boys, especially when you are working on a game which will have really tight controls like a platformer/metroidvania. You can really get a feel for how the controls feel and how satisfying the gameplay loop is alone.

Read an opinion post that said "All games should be prototyped with greyboxes and the placeholder images/meshes that ship with the game engine. That way, you'll know for sure if what you're making is actually fun, or just pretty/juicy." Feels true... but don't think I could bring myself to do it.
