I think there's a misunderstanding outside of academia about what plagiarism is. If a historian puts together an original hypothesis, finds support in a record, and writes it up, it IS plagiarism to just cite the record and the conclusion without citing the historian's publication.

as a cartoonist and historian, I've seen many history comics that are VERY casual about citations. Citations are so important: they thank others for their work, tell the reader who you see yourself in relationship to and how you developed your thought, and provide roadmaps for future researchers.

This is *absolutely* bananas; the wildest (not complimentary) thing you'll read about education today. And the names in the story (both real and fake) are amazing.

Tellingly, students -- tech savvy teens! -- also don't like 'em. A decade ago faculty were constantly told ebooks were the future. Every class I teach, maybe 2 or 3 students buy the ebook. The rest pick print unless the ebook is a lot cheaper. The # has never really budged.

It blows my mind that e-book sales are actually declining, even though e-book readers are better, more varied, and more capable than ever. But not better than printed books, it seems! I can't think of any other medium where the latest way to consume it hasn't won.
