When we were fighting to make PrEP (effective HIV prevention) available on the NHS, the Daily Mail tried to set it up as a conflict between hedonistic gays and people needing surgery. Sad but unsurprising they’re employing the same tactics now, pitting trans and disabled people against each other.

As I've repeatedly been saying - claiming you're improving people's rights but doing so by deliberately excluding certain groups from those rights and thus suggesting they're not 'people' (people born overseas, trans people, the disabled) is a day one fascist trick. I won't vote for it, who would?!

One of the big protests yesterday really can point to years of enthusiastic sponsorship and support by major media outlets and senior politicians, and it isn’t the one asking for civil rights for Palestinians: that’s the one that gets the cops dragging away your gran for t-shirt crimes.

This is an appalling case and Germany deserves far greater international opprobrium over it and similar actions. It also shows why citizenship-on-probation, and other measures that create hierarchies of rights within the same society, must be resisted without compromise.
