Honestly, OBAO was a good film by Hollywood’s standards. Extremely well acted, beautifully shot, inventive writing. Entertaining, sure. But it didn’t *mean* anything. It was not culturally significant. It’s not anywhere in the same league as Sinners in terms of its historic and cultural impact.

Recognition for Coogler’s vision suggests a shift in the zeitgeist. There’s more space being made, even in Hollywood, for Black ancestral work

There was an active campaign in the industry to disenfranchise this movie (reported on in various articles) mainly due to the deal that Coogler struck with Warner. I'm convinced that this prevented it from reaching a half billion $'s at the box office

I agree thoroughly with this statement, I think on this often. But I also realize how a night like tonight - 16 nominations, 4 major wins - can be an affirming moment for the culture & the people. Competing gravitational pulls can be exhausting

Timmy Chalalalamet has had one of the worst Oscar campaigns ever. He seems to have talked his way out of an Oscar. Not just with the ballet opera comment. He seems to have turned voters off of him personally.

It’s that same generosity of spirit when the surreal montage scene in Sinners opens its heart to include Xiqu dancers, which lets me share with my kid another example of “this is your culture being celebrated”. Nods to our communities in these Black spaces is a beautiful, nearly sacred, kindness.
