So back in the day - back before the Pandemic - I tried to plant grapes in my yard. Well, they died. Or so I thought. I have been dealing with a very aggressive vine plant these past few years, but it never fruited before. Well, today, I was cutting it back, and, uh, I have grapes coming in.

Oh hey, I am once again going to talk about lack of distress tolerance, specifically for shame, and how it ties together AI, the “male loneliness epidemic,” Trumpism, and yes, people’s indignation that anyone might think they’re a bad person for continuing to buy Harry Potter merch.

I think what makes Trumpism stand out among other reactionary movements is the absolute indignation that other people might *think* badly of you for actually saying your bigotry out loud. That there might be *social* consequences for anything.

Trumpism, and people who crash out at being told maybe they should stop buying Harry Potter stuff, both seem, at their core, to be motivated by a lack of distress tolerance for shame. Because they’re both crash outs at the idea that there might be social consequences for what you do and say.

Similarly, a lot of the so-called “male loneliness epidemic,” men not having friends and not having romantic partners, is a lack of distress tolerance for vulnerability. Genuine closeness requires vulnerability. People are autonomous—you cannot completely control whether they will hurt you.

So a big reason the executive class is so high on generative AI, not even specifically at work but in their personal lives, wanting to talk to it a lot, wanting to use it for everything, is a lack of distress tolerance for the messy business of dealing with other autonomous humans.

I had the wildest dream last night. It was Platonic Mob Boss Romance. In it, even though I was married, the mob boss need a date for a gala, so he kidnapped me. But most of the dream consisted of me trying on, er, "fancy" outfits. In the dream, they were definitely supposed to be fancy.

Luna is on my desk staring intently out the window lest there be a bunny again while Priscilla does her best to enlist Luna in a game of kitty wrestling. Priscilla does not yet know the wonders of Outside Bunny.

Luna is on my computer desk, and was acting increasingly agitated. I looked out the window to see what had her all stirred up, and there was a terrified looking bunny in the bushes. It ran off before I could get a picture, unfortunately.

It's really depressing how much of the media landscape is (or was influenced by) the works of men who committed horrible crimes, often against girls and women.
