This is absolutely unhinged from Johnson and others. Kirk was a proponent of Great Replacement Theory who called for gays to be stoned and public lynch mobs to murder trans people. He is the definition of a right-wing extremist. The cowardice, avarice and opportunism of Johnson knows no bounds.

It's bad that somebody tried to shoot Trump. It's bad that somebody shot Charlie Kirk. And it was bad when crowds broke into the Capitol building chanting that they planned to hang the VP. This is why pardoning those responsible for political violence is a stupid move. Do you see it now?

A thing social media has enabled is that you can respond to an unimaginable horror about which you feel powerless (the continuing spread of political violence) with something manageable (smearing everyone on a small social site that you dislike).

Of course there are idiots, as there will be on any site with millions of users. But in the age of Musk's X, the idea that it's *this* site which is promoting extremism, radicalising opinion and driving political violence is a fantasy - and it's sad to hear a Today presenter casually pushing it.
