switching your atproto app to an indie relay has had some downsides for most of this year, bc indies have been running different (newer) code than bsky.network, and there have been some bugs. but the biggest bugs seem resolved now, and bsky.network will run the same newer code soon!

delayed update, but I can confirm that this fixed indigo sync1.1 relays dropping all messages from self-hosted PDSs! `relay3.fr.hose.cam` does not yet have the fix, so you can see the difference for your own follows at the ?deactivated checker: compare.hose.cam?deactivated

microcosm if i never had to do ops

Constellation will get some minor maintenance in a few moments: the primary host instance (cassiopeia, the raspberry pi 5) just started falling a bit behind. Failover to the secondary (mikrokosmos, higher capacity) is automatic, so any impact on public requests should only last a few moments.

atcute has had microcosm xrpcs built-in for a bit now and it's such a nice way to use them github.com/mary-ext/atc...

better-than-expected constellation public bucket backup space efficiency: 9 snapshots are retained (8 hour intervals), so it's always possible to recover precisely from one of those moments to 72 hours ago the actual index is ~460GB, so that's only 54% total overhead for 8 extra older copies

BTW: quickslice very very good. For a variety of reasons, but one of them is to introduce conventions around a decent GraphQL API @chadtmiller.com gj It’s totally nuts we got this and @dholms.xyz’s tap at the same time, they’re right in the same part of the stack. Quickslice having a gui is cool

If you missed it, i for a few hours, both that and this acc was isolated from the network. Three seperate relays independently stopped listening to those two accs. And then it randomly connected again. The process was documented in @lost.whey.party

atproto repo car/mst tricks (wip) - (easymode) the "authentication" in AT is a signature of the mst root block. you don't need the full tree for this signature to be useful; a "car slice" is like a narrow chunk of the tree allowing you to fully validate a subset of content given the account pubkey

i also received a bluesky grant, for @microcosm.blue dozens of atproto apps you might know use constellation, for major features like red dwarf, minor ones like leaflet, or as fallback like Blacksky.

the approach we've discussed a bit is to split out DID doc metadata from PLC ops. so the ops are really just about cryptographic keys. DID doc data could then be a separate object referenced by hash (and not retained by the directory after updates)
