A nice thing about having bank holidays off is that I get to do stuff like go on an hour-long walk to stand near some Greylag geese and smile at them. I am a Greylag goose stan. Their faces are objectively cute and people who say otherwise are simply afraid of the truth.

Starting 2026, the UK "year of reading", by telling my partner that I'm disappointed with the promotional materials I was given that simply pass the onus onto the public for "not finding the time to read" rather than asking the difficult hows or whys that is the case.

Also reading isn't a monotonic progression from easy to hard. It's completely fine to read easier books, articles, microblogging sites, after you've first read a long difficult book. It's not a baby book, or too easy.

It's the national year of reading in the uk in 2026. Instead of asking "why don't kids read any more", ask "how can I help them find the stories (and non fic) they will fall in love with". Less "get off my lawn whippersnappers" and more "come, sit on the lawn, here's a comic".
