My fave function of imprisonment in horror is as a catalyst for change. So that pit of worst nightmares / hell of own making pushes a character to make the leap of faith they need to break their loop of self restrictive / destructive behaviours. Even if they don’t make it… 💀 #HorrorWritersChat

Honestly it depends on whether the character is being punished or not. Being trapped with themselves can lead to personal growth through the horror of self-knowledge. Or they can suffer never realising that they did this, ultimately, to themselves. The horror of tragedy v hope. #HorrorWritersChat

In the launderette reading a battered old fantasy anthology that I picked up from an Oxfam and, good boy, the 90s sure were a time 😬 Some of the stories just feel... mean-spirited. Not to mention the ambient bigotry. Still, it's a Le Guin story next, hopefully that will be an improvement.

Watching an episode of MasterChef Australia where they have to make the ultimate sandwich, and it's a little disappointing that no one has thought to put crisps in one.

Syke is Danny Green Ponderous "muscleman" characters with a heart of gold like One Round are a staple of 50s/60s capers, and someone has to do the heavy lifting for Garric and Weston.

Weston is George Cole Every caper needs a (slightly ineffectual) spiv, and who better than George Cole of Flash Harry fame? But if you really want to know which performance I vibed with, it was his turn in Too Many Crooks as Fingers, the determined but hapless gang leader.

Garric is Sid James I couldn't have a 50s/60s Ealing-esque caper without Sid James (in his Lavender Hill Mob/Too Many Crooks era, not the Carry On), and he was exactly the rough-and-ready type you could imagine robbing off with some holy bones, regardless of how powerful they were.

Brother Tertilan is Terry-Thomas The idea of a Terry-Thomas trying to justify his caddish capers (and a saint-napping to boot!) was just too delicious to pass up. After seeing Too Many Crooks and Make Mine Mink, he had to be a top billing.

Keeper Lorens is Dennis Price Conniving, calculating, and dedicated to the luxury his role as relic-keeper grants him, Lorens had to be played by the man who brought the equally calculating Louis Mazzini to life.

I think all authors are guilty of a bit of fan-casting. With Bones of Contention, I went all out. From the very beginning, I wanted this to be a monastic fantasy Ealing caper. Like The Ladykillers or The Lavender Hill Mob, but with an increasingly irritated saint. But who did I cast?

Also if any chuds complain about the pronoun shift for one of the characters, they can't, because it comes straight from the original Norse text, it would be wrong of me *not* to trans them 😇😈🏳️‍⚧️ Can't have inauthentic cis genders in my Norse retelling.

Thinking about how I set out to rewrite a relatively obscure Norse saga as a sword & sorcery for fun, and how actually sitting with the text made me realise it's about - chronic illness - gender roles - parental abandonment - survivor's guilt and trauma - etc as much as it's a zombified Snow White

The excellent thing about last night's Blackbeard's Tea Party gig was that it was delightfully camp folk rock which left me with at least one gruesome horror story idea to noodle with. Also I got to help sing Whip Jamboree, the Scouse-est shanty they sang that night.
