2024 election results mega thread for reference. It will be updated as more studies of the 2024 election become available. Includes some comparisons to the 2020 election as well to help illustrate some points about the real world impacts of the electoral college and how Harris did vs Biden.

Contrary to public perception a huge % of pregnant teenagers in the 1990s were impregnated by adult men. The younger they were, the larger the average age gap between mother and father was. Fixing teen pregnancy was in part a clampdown on statutory rape. That's what conservatives want to reverse.

Feels like it’s important to remember that many of the mayors and governors who authorized for those students to be abused and have their lives ruined were/are Democrats. And the most powerful members of the Democratic Party, like Schumer, were the loudest to call for extreme punishments.

Before I became an American, I was Lebanese. Parts of my family live in Lebanon. Anyway, you don't need those bona fides to feel this way, but what is happening in Lebanon right now is a complete outrage. The people there, who mostly are just trying to carve out a living, don't deserve this.

Here was the context, from the interview with Douthat: 1. Piker called this an instance of adventurism. He is correct. Douthat (and Charen, apparently) doesn't know what that word means, instead thinking it has to do with "adventure." 2. He says it was wrong. 3. He is not lionizing Mangione at all.

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

It's frequently pointed out that NASA activities (and basic/exploratory science in general) have a fantastic return on investment, contributing far more to the economy than they take. But even if they didn't, no one's actually taking from the "cure sick people" pot to put money in the "rockets" pot.

As we approach America's 250th birthday, now is a good time for this reminder: One of our Founders, Thomas Paine, suggested we have a universal basic income for all people 21 and over, funded by a tax on landed wealth and property. Sounds like a hell of a birthday gift, don't you think?

Students seem to be receptive when you pull back the curtain on your own writing process. Show them how messy first drafts are. I do all my edits by hand and I'll bring marked up drafts into class. The point is to recognize that writing is hard and that it takes time.

Students tell us they use AI because it makes their writing better, cleaner, more likely to get an A. But it also makes it empty. LLMs like ChatGPT generate, by design, the most likely ideas and sentences. It is, by definition, impersonal and unoriginal.
