When you see the media spin this war, bear in mind that every single propaganda tactic has just been tested in spinning biden's genocide of Gaza. The exact same playbook, the exact same kinds of lies, the same inevitable violence against protesters: we literally *just* went through this.

We are devastated to learn about the passing of the great palaeontologist Hans Sues. May his legacy live on through all that knew him and the students he mentored. Our thoughts are with his family at this incredibly difficult time 💔. 🔊

For all of Bluesky's culture problems -- and I think we can be honest and note that it does have them -- I really do find it intensely distressing how many people have chosen to actively remain on X, a website basically explicitly designed to drag everyone who uses it to the right

The phrase "trans activist" is goofy because like 95% of the time it's used it refers to a trans person simply existing. Media, pointing at a woman buying a coffee: behold, a trans activist. Woman: buying coffee is not activism stop being so fucking weird Media: trans activist criticizes media

One time a political science major told me to only vote on policy. Looking back, I disagree. For example: the theory of evolution isn’t a policy position, but it’s acceptance or denial can tell you a lot about someone’s character as well as what they would do if elected.

Eugenics is wild. You've some dudes going "have you noticed how better read, educated and musical we are in relation to the rest of population. Must be our genes" No. Dude, you are inanely affluent, went to a private school, you're not special, you're a participant in active class stratification.

I once again feel compelled to remind folks that you feel science news/new scientific developments are bad and destructive because you are not reading science news: You are reading techbro press releases, regurgitated uncritically by outlets that long ago fired all their science/tech beat reporters.

"Sure, ICE is bad, but we need to deport illegal immigrants" No you don't. If immigration enforcement leads to concentration camps and roving death squads, maybe it's time to just get rid of the concept of illegal immigration entirely. You've tried it, it's a bad idea in practice, so bin it.

one thing that would be cool, when prominent creators turn out to be terrible people, would be if we didn't have to go through this performative dance of insisting that their work was never good in the first place.

The funny thing about a certain type of angry conspiracy guy is that they’re literally being confronted with an elite paedophile ring and a tyrannical government at the same time right now, and because it isn't being done by the people they wanted it to be done by they’re all being pussies about it

People who know me personally always claim I “know everything about dinosaurs”. That isn’t true and I’m glad it isn’t, if I knew everything about dinosaurs there would be nothing for me to learn about them and they would no longer be interesting to me.

It’s no comfort, but the official DHS line being “he can be killed by masked agents of the state because he had a legal gun” is such an interesting new frontier in how Trump has made the conservative movement very publicly and embarrassingly abandon every principal it once claimed.

I keep seeing posts stating that ICE cannot enter your home or a private business without a judicial warrant. While that is legally correct, in reality ICE routinely violates the law by forcing their way in, often by smashing down doors, before violently assaulting people. Trumpism is fascism.
