I think in both countries there's also an idea that certain cohorts of protesters are more deserving of lenient policing (because they somehow represent the "real people") whereas others (e.g. climate, genocide protesters) are being awkward and therefore deserve swift and harsh action.

In reality, everything from a zebra crossing to a new city library is micro-managed by central government — adding delays, removing democracy.

The rise in fuel bills is too high. But so is the rise in rents. TDs asking for a cap on the former are the very ones who just voted to remove restrictions on the latter. Renters abandoned to the mercy of the market. Businessmen apparently need protection from it. The Irish caste system at work.
