Celebration at City Hall to mark 35 years since Dan Boyle’s first election to Cork City Council 🥳 Dan made history in 1991 as Cork’s first Green Party councillor. He has since served the people of Cork as a city councillor, TD, Senator & most recently, as Cork’s first Green Lord Mayor in June 2024.

I was delighted to welcome European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Taoiseach Micheál Martin to Cork City Council yesterday. As Ireland takes on the EU Presidency for the next six months, I wish Micheál Martin every success in this important role.

Greyhounds should be treated as pets, not livestock The increase in the number of deaths of dogs in the greyhound sector needs to be examined. The State should not be funding this, and instead funding should be given to transitioning these dogs to loving homes where they can live out their lives.

I questioned Minister Seán Canney last week at the Oireachtas Transport Committee about the bizarre decision to disconnect RTI displays from the public lighting network. It was news to him too - I'll be following up with him to get a proper answer on this 🤔

It was with heavy heart that I attended the Bessberro Commemoration yesterday. I was proud to be part of this fantastic traffic and parking team, helping families, survivors, friends, and visitors to park safely at the site.

It was an honour to pay tribute to Cllr Ted Tynan at Cork City Council in May. Ted's encouragement meant a great deal to me from my first days in the Council. His commitment to working people, his community, & his unwavering solidarity with the people of Palestine have been a real inspiration.

New pedestrian crossings are installed at St Luke's Cross — finally! All four are raised crossings (📸 in thread below). One's a zebra crossing and one's fully signalised. Lights still not active at the new signalised crossing, but progress at last.

In my submission to the public consultation, I've describe the demolition plans as "sticking two fingers at the nation’s cultural heritage". The proposal takes the same attitude to roosting bats and previous plans to redevelop the site for housing.

Thanks Amy Nolan and the Echo for reporting local reaction to plans to demolish Old Cork Prison, without telling anyone what's to come next. Engagement with either the community or Cork City Council is non-existent — and the disregard for the built and natural heritage of the area is breathtaking.

I'm calling for action to improve safety at the entrance to Silverdale during Cork Constitution match days. Simple changes to the junction, together with better traffic management involving the Council, Gardaí and Cork Constitution, can help keep access clear for residents and emergency vehicles.

LGBTQI+ rights are not yet equal in Europe. In the UK, they are pushing back against trans rights. But last week, they banned conversion ‘therapy’ in the Netherlands. Progress may be slow but it is happening. And we will not stop fighting for the LGBTQI+ community.

This week I visited Pic Du Jer Close after residents contacted me about the poor condition of their roads and footpaths. People living in the same estate deserve the same standard of infrastructure. I've brought a motion to Cork City Council calling for action.

⚡If we are serious about battery storage and build now, 2 GW of storage could be available in Ireland by the early 2030s, saving us a minimum of €100 million in wasted energy, reducing carbon emissions, while also improving our energy security.

Residents in Greenvalley have made one thing clear to me. They don't want expensive delays. They want safer streets now. This week I visited the area after concerns were raised about speeding traffic. Simple, affordable traffic calming measures can make a real difference without waiting years.

The Department of Justice has proposed to demolish the Old Cork Prison, a NIAH listed building, with no plans for what will replace it. The site was identified by the LDA for housing. The Minister says he now wants to build a new prison on the site — but no plans yet, just destruction for now.

Great to visit this impressive solar farm at Ballinrea, overlooking Cork City this week. Projects like this show how we can tackle the energy crisis, reduce electricity costs, and build a cleaner, more secure future. We need to see more renewable energy projects like this across Cork and Ireland.

There’s a weather warning for high temperatures this week, the sun is shining bright and people are out enjoying the nice weather after weeks of rain and clouds. But in this weather we need to be protecting our skin with sun cream.

Over the last 6 months the Oir. Transport Committee has met on the topic of Road Safety, hearing from groups as diverse as cyclists and road hauliers. One common finding from these hearings is a complete lack of confidence in the Road Safety Authority to fulfil their central mission to save lives.
