Jazz OTD: I suspect that agent Irving Mills, who had been important to getting Duke Ellington his long-term Cotton Club stint, has co-writer status on the Cootie Williams exquisite tune "Echoes of the Jungle" for contractual reasons, but here's Ellington's great orchestra on June 16, 1931.

Jazz OTD: I admit that I don't fully understand the release-related controversy surrounding Albert Ayler's "Prophecy" (re-released on CD with "Ghosts"). But the saxophonist's fierce work (rec. June 14, 1964) with Gary Peacock (b) and Sunny Murray (d) remains a powerful listen decades later.
